Home style and design are perpetually evolving, changing, and unique to each individual’s own tastes.  However, there are undoubtedly some trends that are emerging that are here to stay. As the first month of 2020 comes to an end, we’re taking a look over some of the top Florida home trends to keep your eye out for this year.

Outdoor Kitchens

In the sunshine state, we are lucky to live in a place where our outdoor living spaces can be utilized year-round. We have seen a steady rise in the emphasis on outdoor living spaces over the past several years, but in 2020 we’re seeing the popularity of complete outdoor kitchens and living spaces emerge.

Outdoor kitchens and living spaces provide a comfortable way for the individuals preparing the food and their guests to enjoy each other’s company, outdoors of course. These outdoor living spaces make outdoor entertaining easier and more enjoyable for all parties involved.

A typical Florida outdoor kitchen includes a built-in gas grill with a hood, a sink, and a small under counter refrigerator. There are several manufacturers of outdoor kitchen cabinets that utilize special material to stand up to our Florida weather.  Homeowners often add their own touches and additions to make their outdoor kitchen fit their unique needs, adding amenities such as wood-burning pizza ovens or a custom wine fridge is not uncommon. Whether you are looking to entertain large groups, or just enjoy some fresh air and time outdoors with your family, outdoor kitchens and living spaces are a good choice for soaking up the Florida weather any time of year.

Pools

To no one’s surprise, Florida has always been a place where pools are popular, but pools themselves are changing. One popular modern take on luxury pools in Florida are pools with acrylic see-through windows or entire sidewalls of pools made of this material for complete see-through pools. Recent technology has made this possible and gives pools a bigger, more luxurious feel.

These unique pool panels are also often combined with another pool trend, infinity pools. Infinity pools have water flows that go over at least one edge of the pool, giving an appearance of endless water. Putting a clear acrylic window or wall on the infinite side of an infinity pool helps lead to the appearance and desired feel when adding one of these pools to a property. This is a case that shows that trends are not always competing with each other, but sometimes rather they complement each other perfectly.

Countertops

When you think of a trendy, high-end kitchen, countertops are sure to cross your mind. But what is new for countertops in 2020?

“Honed finish” countertops are a bit less glossy than the traditional popular shiny finish we’ve seen become popular over the last few years. This finish does not emphasize fingerprints or water spots like its glossy counterpart, all while adding a high-end look.

Using slab countertops as a backsplash is also a recent trend. To accomplish this look you take the same countertop material chosen in a kitchen and also use it as a backsplash in an area of your kitchen you would like to highlight. This gives the beautiful material a chance to be appreciated from a new perspective and creates a larger and more pulled together feel for the kitchen overall.

“Live edge” wood countertops incorporate the natural edge of the wood into the design of the counter top.  Using a live edge counter top on your kitchen island becomes a statement piece and functional work of art. This unique type of countertop offers a natural organic style and is a great alternative to a traditional countertop.

Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP)

Luxury vinyl plank flooring is both waterproof and durable and is able to provide the look of hardwood floors. It has increased durability, many aesthetic options, easy and fast installation, and a luxurious feel. One of the best things about this trend is that even though all these advantages might sound like the pricetag would scare you off, it is often more affordable than other high-end options.

Home Styles

There is a vast variety of home styles in Florida, but the most popular for this upcoming year is projected to be Mediterranean, Modern, and Farmhouse style.

  • Modern Style is a minimalistic style that emphasizes clean lines, neutral colors, and simplicity. Large tiles, minimal grain wood floors, open floor plans, and minimal molding or trimming throughout the home are all common traits in modern style homes.
  • Modern Farmhouse Style is coming to Florida!  It is recognized for its warm, simple, homey feel. Typically characterized by clean lines, natural materials and textures, lots of white mixed with other neutrals and the stark contrast of a darker color (usually black) mixed in. A lot of used or repurposed items are often featured to give Farmhouse style a more home-like feel.
  • West Indies Style is a favorite style in coastal Florida home design.  You often see light colored exteriors with darker colored wood details, large verandas, amazing ceiling details and louvered shutters. All of these aspects make this home one that favors warmer weather, so it is no surprise it is always a popular style in our sunny state.

All these unique styles have amazing aspects that make it easy to see why they are among the top styles at this time.
