How to Build Your Vacation Home in 2022

At LaBram homes, one of our specialties is designing and building vacation homes for our customers.

For some of our customers, their new property is their holiday retreat. Many would also like it to become their forever home once they retire or decide to sell their primary house and relocate.

If you’re thinking about building your own vacation destination home, here are some of our recommendations for creating a home you’ll love for many years.

Build up

A vacation home should deliver the kind of experience you can’t get where you are now. Getting away is all about luxury and having the space to spread out.

Whether your ideal lot has limited acreage or is spacious, go for height when you plan your escape. Homes that are three stories high are popular because they offer plenty of room to spread out plus they capture the amazing waterfront views we have here in Florida. Vertically expansive homes have the benefit of providing:

  • A great view of your property and the scenic surroundings, particularly if you have a waterfront home or if you build near the coast. Balconies overlooking the water are a perfect way to enjoy the Florida sunsets.
  • Lots of space. Bedrooms and guest rooms are essential when friends and relatives visit your retreat. You’ll also have room to host when the kids and grandkids visit during spring break or the holidays.

Make room for entertainment spaces

With all that space, you’ll have lots of options for creating entertainment areas. As we’ve noted recently, those areas can include a playroom, theatre, or rec room.  You might also want a gym, or a large, dedicated space for friends and family to gather during get-togethers. Another great option: a room where you can enjoy some “me” time.

Bring the outdoors in (and the indoors out)

Large windows, expansive sliding glass doors, combined with organic architectural features and landscaping materials like wood and stone, can transform a house into paradise. The windows and doors bring in the light while also giving you a panoramic view of your surroundings – a great complement to the multi-story build.

You can also include features like:

  • An outdoor kitchen and dining area. Imagine sitting outside, looking out over the water and having great conversation with family and friends over a nice home cooked dinner.
  • Large, covered decks. Protect yourself from the sun while enjoying its warmth and the Florida breezes in a luxurious, spacious setting that is ideal for entertaining.

By seeing past the traditional dividing line between indoor and outdoor areas, you’ll create a home that invites you, your family, and your guests to take advantage of all the creature comforts Florida has to offer within an even more spacious environment.

Budget appropriately

Today, your new vacation home will be your getaway. Tomorrow, it will be where you live, play, and relax every day.  The average budget for these homes runs in the neighborhood of $1 – $5 million. This price tag will be worth it for many homeowners who see the value that they are getting: all the comforts you could want, a home away from home today, and a place to hang your hat forever.
